Long Live the Nobel Prize!

I am perhaps not the right person to express such an opinion on the recent conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Commission. For years this sanctimonious body has never been questioned even after Barrack Obama got the prize within a year of being in office. And that too, for peace. Very few people questioned this decision as American authoritarianism cannot be questioned. It must only be accepted.

And now we have this shameful sight of the European Commission getting the award. For what? How have the propagated peace in Europe let alone the world. The Nobel Peace Prize is given to outstanding individuals and organizations for being mediators of peace, for being instrumental in upholding human rights, in conflict areas or in warring zones. Mother Teresa got the peace award for her contribution to humanity not only in her adopted country but in the entire world. ArchBishop Desmond Tutu got for similar reasons for fighting conflict in troubled zones and poverty stricken countries, to become the beackon of light and hope in the midst of darkness. Nelson Mandela got it for fighting the worst type of human aberration, that is a racial outlook and distinction of human beings based on the colour of their skins.

But has the European Commission done? Has it fought against the concept of foreign intervention and ruthless aggrandisement? Has it brought a climat of peace in Europe? In fact, the European Commssion treads on American ruthless intervention. It is a yes man. It says yes to the powers who control the world and who account for more than 80 to 90 percent of the world's wealth.

I was reading  a newspaper article which mentioned that the highlight of the European Commission's achievement was the Euro Dollar and could it survive. This means, that we are crediting the EC for bringing together the European nations on the basis of a filmsy economy - the Euro Dollar.

Barrack Obama's winning the Nobel Prize was an electrifying shock, this has perhaps sounded the death knell of the Nobel Prizes, not only the peace prize. Yet we do not say anything, because it is blasphemy to criticize European or American hypocrisy, banality and even there venal motives. How sacrosanct they are that we cannot impute any charges against them. And the Nobel committee has continued with its flagrant opposition to the human voice and concentrated mainly on the west. To give the award to a Chinese for literature this year is perhaps a left handed compliment to the East and South Asia.

It is not for nothing that Indian stalwarts such as Mahatma Gandhi and scientists like Satyan Bose and Meghna Saha did not get the Nobel Prize. After all they competed with the west and its imperialism in politics and knowledge and got the better of them.

Long live the Nobel Prize committee.
