My thoughts on 'Hasee Toh Phasee'

The flip side of watching a highly rated movie after reading good reviews about the same is that one goes to the theater with loads of expectation. Result: Atrium or Ventricle break (Not the entire heart break, I mean).

'Hasee Toh Phasee' made me feel somewhat like that. Watching this movie was never in my wish list till I found some of my friends speaking very high of this film in facebook status updates. Decided to watch it, after a brief chat with one of them who wrote to me specifically in chat message, "Watched such a refreshing movie after a long time. Its a must watch."

Without making any further delay, I headed to my nearest movie hall. After horrible trailer of 'Ragini MMS' and semi-interesting trailer of 'Queen', the film finally starts.

STORY:

'Hasee Toh Phasee' is a story of Boy-Meets-Girl. A typical concept packaged half-brilliantly in a fine mixture of conventional and modern aspects. Nikhil (Sidharth Malhotra) is a businessman who tries to make a successful relationship with his girlfriend Karishma (Adah Sharma), even after multiple break-ups. He is sentimental type whereas Karishma (an actress by profession) is highly temperamental. They decided to tie the knot and during this course Karishma's sister Meeta (Parineeti Chopra) arrives in the plot. Meeta is a Chemical Enginner from IIT who fled away from her house and started researching in China a couple of years back. Now she is again back to India for a reason. She falls for Nikhil and wants to be with him. Nikhil disagrees for he is already committed to Karishma. What happens next ? Is there any strict definition of loyalty in love ? Better not to unfold the story anymore. So, let that be answered after watching the film in big screen.

THUMBS UP:

Parineeti Chopra literally steals the show with her effortless acting and she looked cute also. Siddharth Malhotra shines in his role. Vishal-Shekhar’s music is good whereas Amitabh Bhattacharya and Kumaar’s lyrics are beautiful. Amar Mangrulkar’s background music and Sanu Varughese’s camerawork are engaging. Aditya Kanwar’s sets and editing by Shweta Venkat look impressive. Thanks to Anurag Kashyap, Harshavardhan Kulkarni, Purva Naresh and Vinil Mathew for the witty dialogues. As a debutant director, Vinil Mathew surely makes impact. Some scenes are quite captivating. Glimpses:

1) Nikhil locks Meeta in a room for some reason. Meeta gets upset and asks what about if she wants to go to toilet. Nikhil says to control the pressure since she is grown up, not a kid. After a few hours Nikhil opens the door and discovers Meeta soaked in her own urine. Meeta says, she cannot control the pressure for some medical reason. Nikhil hugs Meeta with her urine soaked saree. A feeling of compassion instead of typical antipathy that is usually associated with such excretion was away there. A heart touchy shot indeed.

2) The bag of Nikhil's father is searched to find a lost necklace under Meeta's supervision. There one by one many items came out followed by interesting dialogues.

Like, a pair of socks came out first. Nikhil's father says, "Achhi socks hain. Made in England..".
Then its the term of underwear. He says, "Don't display. Keep those inside.."

Now some tablets. "Revital hain woh" says someone else from the backdrop. Along with dialogues, the expressions here were really funny.

3) Meeta asks Nikhil to call a girl to tie her blouse. Nobody else was found nearby. So Nikhil did the job for her. Its said that when we start to love someone then, along with mind, our body also welcomes the person. The coziness of that moment when Nikhil's finger touches the skin of Meeta, lips were just a few millimeters away, then it somehow resembled those lines by Oscar Wilde "You don’t love someone for their looks, or their clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear.” One of the sweetest scene of the film!

THUMBS DOWN:

Story and Screenplay by Harshavardhan Kulkarni are a bit loose. Climax was so predictable that it almost looked like a simple algebra, where the solution is based on cliched theory. It becomes predictable too at many parts. For example:

1) That scene where Nikhil tries to hack the computer of Meeta's father (Manoj Joshi) and puts random passwords, there after repeated failed attempts when the camera takes a close-up shot, he frowns. Tries a new password and this time, he puts it right. It was quite expected that the password is 'Meeta' (inference drew after spending some 110 minutes watching the movie) even before he types it in the screen.

2) Toward the climax where Nikhil gets caught by some spikes and finds it difficult to cross them, Meeta asks him, "Kya hua ? Bhag rahe ho?". Before Nikhil replies, a viewer sitting next to me whispers to himself, "Abhi toh phasee hu". And Nikhil says almost the same, "Philhaal toh phasee hu.." I could not help laughing. The dialogues too were predictable at some parts.

On the whole, 'Hasee toh Phasee' is a very good attempt, but fails to rule every corner of heart. Its certainly a boon in Parineeti Chopra's career and in facebook I already saw her name in 'Trending list'. Its only for her amazing portrayal of Meeta that you can consider to watch the film twice. Parallely the chemistry of lead pair reminds us that idea of love as quoted by Nizar Qabbani, “I hadn’t told them about you, but they saw you bathing in my eyes. I hadn’t told them about you, but they saw you in my written words. The perfume of love cannot be concealed..”

Surely an enjoyable entertainer for this Valentine's week !!
