Words

Words ,words, words-
They hit you like flies
Buzzing on a hot mango-sticky
Summer afternoon.
Words that pulsate under your skin
Like festering wounds
Refusing to be ignored.
They enter your eyes
Like specks of dust
Filling them with hot salty tears
They are all over you
Overwhelming you
And cutting off your
Oxygen-supply before you realize.

Words that encase
Evocative images
Bringing to life
Forgotten experiences
Useless and inane
Words that you gather
Like sea-shells on the Vizag beach
That you so tirelessly collect
Only to empty your pockets
And throw away
The moment you reach home.

Words that jar and grate
Like the disagreeable sound of
Heavy steel furniture
Being dragged on a dusty floor
Words that fill you with disgust
Like when you see a swarm of flies
Around the half-eaten mango
Carelessly thrown away
Words that evoke the terrible
Stink of the rotting carcass
Of the stray dog run over by
A passing truck on the highway

Words, words ,words
Absurd words, imperfect words
Hopeless words that signify
The essential futility
Of human expression
And the banality
Of human existence itself.
Words stink. Words sting
Words cut, Words blunt.
Words are agonizing
Words are dehumanizing.
