Arya Bhushan
Arya Bhushan was born on July
11, 1918 in Meerut, India. He graduated from Allahabad University in
1937, and from the Thomason College of Civil Engineering, Roorkee (now
the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee) in 1940. In 1942, he was
selected for the Indian Railway Service of Engineers and posted on the
North Western Railway. He married Swarn Lata Mital, the same year. He
worked on many railway constructions, Viz. Sukkur-Habibkot in Sindh,
Mukerian-Pathankot in Punjab, and Robertsganj-Garhwa Road in Uttar
Pradesh. He was also a Major in the Territorial Army, commanding a
Railway Construction and Maintenance Company. In 1959 he was selected to
the Commission of Railway Safety, finally rising to the post of Chief
Commissioner of Railway Safety and retired in 1976. Thereafter, from
1977 to 1980 he worked as Hindi Advisor to the Railway Board and also as
a member of the Railway Accidents Inquiry Committee 1978.
