What’s with Colors?

A heart-wrenching flash fiction

One was Fair, one was Black. People from outside came to see, and to select one among them. They left after scrutinizing Fair and Black for some time, saying that they will get back after discussions. The Black told the Fair, “I am sure they will select me.” The Fair felt offended and asked, “What makes you so sure?” Black said, “I am sure because of the way they glanced at me. Didn’t you notice the small smile playing on their lips when they looked at me?”

In the next building, a very similar incident was taking place. One was Fair, one was Black. People from outside came to see, and to select one amongst them. They left after scrutinizing Fair and Black for some time, saying that they will get back after discussions. In this house, nobody spoke but the Black thought, “I am sure I will be selected. I have beautiful eyes and a well-shaped rounded nose, and I am plump too. Who will look at the shapeless eyes and nose of Fair?”

In the first house, the Fair six year old girl was selected, her parents surreptitiously selling her off to a brothel in the city, leading to one less mouth to feed and one less girl child to take care of. Fair was a great profitable choice as compared to Black, as dark skinned girls never fetch good price in the flesh trade.

In the second house, the Black was selected, because everyone would love to watch a shiny black pup run around in the house!
