Congress-National Conference Coalition on War Path
A few months from now Jammu and Kashmir State will be put to assembly polls. National and regional political parties have pulled up their socks with their respective political agenda. In the emerging political scenario, Dr Farooq Abdullah’s National Conference (NC) and Congress Party in coalition headed by Omar Abdullah has come to its end, getting at each other’s throat.
The coalition between Congress-NC based on mistrust from the day one, was observed by political pundits as disastrous for the state. Eventually, observations were proved correct. The state’s social, political, economic and religious slipped into controversies and contradictions mode. Unfortunately, UPA-I or UPA-II at centre watched the situation in Kashmir brewing up to meet their own political ends and left the people to suffer.
The J&K State assembly has the strength of 87 members. Of which NC ( 28), Cong(17), PDP of Mufti Mohd Sayed ( 21), BJP (11), Panthers Party(3) and DPI, CPI(M), DPF one each and Independent 4. Congress-NC in coalition is strongly opposed by PDP and BJP. Elections in state were held in 2008. Ironically, when the elections are round the corner both the allies Congress and NC have started accusing each other in public for miss governance in the state. Politically they have parted the ways recently, but are together in the government. Seniors leaders from both the parties realized that coalition government failed in the state as it did not percolate down the masses. But, too late for them to feel the pulses of masses.
Recently, Coalition Coordination Committee (CCC), headed by Prof Saif U din Soz was forced to cancel the meeting for which NC had already circulated a message to all the members. A senior NC leader, wishing anonymity, said that to stay away from the CCC was the party’s decision to register its protest against Soz’s remarks. “How can there be coordination when Congress president talks against us in public. So we protested and refused to attend the meeting,” he said. Giving befitting reply to NC leaders ,many Congress leaders and a few ministers also shot letters to AICC president Sonia Gandhi demanding that pressure must be build on NC to mend its ways in JK. “The Congress leaders have explained how NC has exploited the major issues to take undue credit alone like enhancement in retirement age and regularizing the ReTs,” a source privy to the development Senior Congress leader and Vice-president Abdul Gani Vakil, has said that NC activities at present are the outcome of their frustration. “They have started cutting ribbons and taking every step to restore the lost confidence among the people. The NC is playing political gimmicks and are deceiving people. People are fed up with them,” Vakil said. “There is no rationale to continue the relation when we have already separated our ways. High command must take a call and end the alliance for the betterment of people,” Vakil said.
Politically, if Abdul Gani Vakil’s statement is deliberated, both the coalition partners should not continue un-holy alliance. If good sense prevails upon both the ally partners they should honorably handover state administration to governor of the state, for the people, to the people and by the people to keep the Indian democracy flying high.
