This recent Mamootty- Jyotika starrer in Malayalam became a matter of discussion today. But, to a limited elite and among an educated circle. The film directed by Jeo Baby deals with the most controversial, untouchable subject in India on homosexuality. But surprisingly, the story is dealt with great care like handling a fragile glass item throughout.
The film could have slipped into love scenes between two males or the husband and wife which are bound to become a subject of great discussion and derision. But director Jeo Baby treaded his path with great care, giving focus only on the emotions of the main protagonists Mathew Devassy and Omana. Some of the supporting actors play significant roles but with great restraint
The sexual orientation of a male or female was a matter of crime till recently in India. But today it has changed and yet a taboo still hangs over them socially. The end also is quite convincing which was once again done very suggestively.
One cannot but appreciate Mammootty for taking the role of a gay man at this stage of his long innings with conviction and also donning it with grace. Jyotika as the victim of the marriage acts with stoic silences, one-liners, and crisp dialogues. No doubt the movie is revolutionary, educative, and convincing without hyperboles. Kudos to the team for their bold adventure in South Indian cinema!
