Kamala Das: A Losing Battle

How can my love hold him when the other
Flaunts a gaudy lust and is lioness
To his beast?
Men are worthless, to trap them
Use the cheapest bait of all, but never
Love, which in a woman must mean tears
And a silence in the blood.

To discuss Kamala Das is to discuss love, the bodily emotions of love. To discuss her is to discuss man-woman relationship and dissatisfaction in love. Strained relationship, neurotic mental state, abnormal living, maladjustment, domestic violence, bodily love, possessive male domination, disturbed psyche, etc. are the focal points of discussion as and when we take up her poetry.

How can she love him if love cannot be expected from the life partner, if he tries not to understand her feelings? She is a lioness if awakened and the beast, the brute in him is but nothing before her prowess. Men are worthless and to trap them is so easy. Just the bait will work. But never love you, give you your heart. To love is to be sad. To love is to be broken. Love you the body. Never give you your soul. If give you the heart, you will feel it hollow from your within. What can love give? Love just aggravates the pain. Love only gives tears to the eyes. But our blood is hot. It does not understand the language of poetry.

The intricacies of man-woman relationship, it is very difficult to peep into. Human relations are very complex, especially the tangle of relationship. Man-woman story is but a lustful story of life.

A Losing Battle, what battle has she won and has she lost? Which battle is she going to describe? It is actually not a battle, but a different battle. It is about a woman, a woman’s story.  It is about the rights of a woman not here. It is about possessive love. The lust of the body and fulfillment of love is actually the matter. Sometimes we fail to understand what she is actually for whether a sexist writer or a controversial one. The body is the center. The poetess asks to love, but not by heart and soul. Love the body, not the soul. Actually, Kamala Das is not a soul-lover, but a body-lover. Extra-marital love is her space of intrusion.
