Once upon a time, in the enchanting town of PariNagar, there stayed a young girl called Sapna.
She perpetually existed in a fantasy state, like a daydreamer in her own big, rosy-hued bubble of imagination.
Her Dad Suresh read out magical fairy tale stories to her in childhood and would treat her like a little princess, while Mom Sujata played the role of bad cop disciplining Sapna whenever she played tantrums or made a mistake.
Tragedy struck when Sapna's beloved father passed away during her early years, leaving Sujata to navigate the challenges of life alone. Despite her best efforts, she struggled to make ends meet, barely managing enough to get by with her basic needs.
“My dad is getting me Anna Elsa today," Annika yelled hysterically.
Big Deal!! My dad had bought me a Barbie dress. Shruti smirked, belittling Annika’s prized possession.
Girls, you can’t beat this!! My dad has bought me a new car to go to school with a chauffeur.
Mom and I shopped for party dresses and a matching Cindrella sandal at the mall. Bhavya shunned everyone with her gargantuan sweep of luxury.
Annika, Shruti, and Bhavya were school friends of Sapna and showed off their extravagance, which disheartened her all the more, devoid of any such pricey possessions.
For Sapna, it was like attending a never-ending parade of luxury, and it gnawed at her. Out of despair and with no one to pamper her, she turned out to be a cranky kid, always arguing with her mother.
That's when Annika, the schoolyard’s wise kid, dropped a bombshell suggestion: "Convince your mom you're the perfect daughter, and watch her turn into a fairy granting all your wishes!"
As suggested, Sapna tried this trick, faking up a good daughter and helping her out with daily chores.
In the evening, when Sujata returned home, Sapna was ready with a glass of water and snacks, with decorations all over the tidied place, to win her mom’s attention.
Aww, such a lovely girl. It's hard to believe that you're actually transforming into the princess your dad always wished you to be.
Let me make your special dish today. Sujata hurtled towards the kitchen in fits of happiness.
“No mama... I don’t need any of that. Can you grant me a wish?"
"Oh, sure, my buttercup. You’ve been helping me a lot lately. Sujata cheek pinched Sapna with motherly compassion.
Can you please be my fairy for at least a day and grant all my wishes on my birthday? Not a big ask, I suppose.
Umm... It depends on your wishes, sweetheart.
Don’t worry, mom. I’ll ask nothing out of the world—simply what other kids ask for.
Sujata thought for a while and retorted, OK, but I have a condition.
"What's the catch, Mama? I'm all in!" Sapna asked eagerly, casting a curious glance in her mother's direction.
So, you won’t ask anything after that day, and you’ll have to be ready to take no for an answer henceforth.
Done, Mama, my sweet fairy. Sapna embraced Sujata, holding on like a baby monkey.
With the dawn of a new day, Sapna, as planned, unleashed a torrent of wishes.
Mom... Please get me these chocolates.
Please get me these party dresses.
Please buy me this red car to go to school, and I need a chauffeur as well.
I need a Barbie and an Anna Elsa.
Let’s have pizza in this restaurant.
Sapna impulsively spilled all her whims and fancies, and without a second thought, her mom Sujata made each one come true without asking any questions.
It was like a spending spree, and the whole town couldn't stop buzzing about Sapna's fairy-tale day.
The next day, Sujata rushed to work.
Sapna knew her day was over and marched towards her school wearily.
Thanks Annika. Your suggestion worked. My mom turned a fairy to me and granted all my wishes. Now I do have everything you guys have. Boasted Sapna with a smirk.
As envy settled in the hearts of others, Sapna’s charade was the talk of the class.
Little did Sapna know that this unreal happiness of hers would not last longer.
She, being persistent in her daydreaming, kept asking for more.
Sujata denied her requests, reminding her of the consequences of fairy roleplaying.
As she grew into a teenager, Sujata schooled Sapna more often and admonished her to behave properly.
Sapna couldn't help but wonder why her mother seemed so unyielding and indifferent. While her peers continued to freely pursue their fanciful desires, Sapna found herself increasingly neglected and isolated.
In an unexpected turn of events, Bhavya coerced Sapna into a birthday bash that felt more like a parade of discomfort and awkwardness.
Sapna was taken aback by the affection and indulgence showered upon her by her parents.
That was the most lavish and happening party she had ever been to.
Bhavya, as usual, bragged about her mother, while Sapna wailed internally at her helplessness with her mom.
"Wow, Aunty, you're such an amazing mom, unlike mine. Bhavya is truly blessed to have you," Sapna exclaimed, applauding and expressing her discontent simultaneously.
"Don't say that Sapna. All moms are wonderful," Aunty replied.
No Aunty... My mom is the biggest Killjoy of all time. She has no plans for me.
Before Aunty could reciprocate to that, Bhavya declared, my mom is an evergreen fairy, not some one-day fairy.
Fairy?? Enquired Aunty curiously
Yes Aunty, in my growing years, once, my mom became fairly like you for a day and granted all my wishes, but that was all about it. Sapna explained with a lack of enthusiasm, wearing a somewhat puppy-like expression.
Oh, is it? As I understand it, your dad has passed away. It must be tough on your mom. How did she manage to pull off all that you asked for??
Umm, I don’t know, but she somehow magically did it back then.
I guess you should ask her, Sapna. Prodded Aunty.
After the party was over, that question kept lurking in Sapna's mind.
As soon as she reached home, she saw her mom waiting for her with her favorite dish.
My girl, you've blossomed into such a beauty. Sujata's tender touch conveyed her deep motherly affection and care for Sapna."
Mom, what on earth did you do to become a fairy on my birthday? Sapna asked, eyes wide with curiosity.
Sujata chuckled. "Oh, where's this sudden detective mode coming from, my dear?"
Sapna insisted, "Just tell me, please!"
Ok, I had to break your father’s FD, which he saved for your education.
Our house was already in debt, child, with no savings. I couldn’t give you what you asked for after that, besides continuing your education.
Sorry for being a bad mom, my dear. I turn deaf to you sometimes, but believe me, I wish to give you all happiness, my child. Sujata wept her emotions out.
Realizing her mistakes, tears welled up in Sapna's eyes.
Maa, don’t you worry now. I promise to be your fairy forever hereafter. With a mischievous pout, proclaimed Sapna, brandishing her imaginary wand.
