Rizvi: Lord Buddha

I.H. Rizvi is one of those practitioners of Indian English verse who have been concerned with the romantic strains, trends and tendencies while pursuing to profess and hone it so deftly.  A romantic, he is connected with the lyrical side of poetry along with the dreamy glide he takes. Falling Petals, 1975, Unfading Blooms, 1984, Thirsty Pebbles, 1986, Wandering Fragrance, 1989, Wounded Roses Sing, 1993, Snowflakes of Dreams, 1996, Clouds in Cages, 1999, etc. are the collections of poems which he has authored, and these have mostly been published by Prakash Book Depot, Bareilly. The features of English romanticism and English poets are readily available in him apart from Indian realms he adds to. Simple folks, ordinary matters and commonplace imagery and subjects form the core-content of his poetry. He is a poet of the heart-matter and a singer of verse. Dreams, flowers and social realities take the poetic space of his poetry.

Dr. I.H. Rizvi had been the Principal of Tilak College, Bareilly, U.P. and used to bring it out, Canopy which he edited for so long. His poems used to appear in different literary journals and was a man of different sorts. He used to write in English and Urdu as well.

Lord Buddha as a poem is on Buddha and Buddhism, the story of Enlightenment he speaks out as well as talks about the gospels and teachings of the Master. A small poem it is a gist of the matter, taking the thematic into outlines to opine his thoughts and ideas. Goutam Buddha, how did he go away renouncing the throne and his royal heritage as for the betterment of mankind and human race? The Eight-fold Path for us to peruse upon, he talks of, the Middle Path shown by Buddha as for to follow in life and draw lessons from. The Mahabodhi Tree he speaks of while taking to the topic and deliberating upon. The first Sermon given at Sarnath still strikes the chords and rings it about how did the Master deliver it. It is shantih which but matters. Silence gives consent. How to attain the state of Nirvana? How to attain salvation?

Divine Buddha, the Great ‘Enlightened One’
saw sacred light beneath  ‘Mahabodhi Tree’
and gave first Sermon at Sarnath to free
the world from the cares of death or salvation,
which can be gained by right thought, faith, action,
words, livelihood, effort and memory
and meditation in full austerity.
He said ‘mid course ‘ is best all said and done.
Lord preached the path of true Nirvan and Karm,
And taught: If man puts out hot passion’s fires,
he may make life a tranquil, holy lot.
The path He showed is true, non-violent, firm
which frees man from clutch of mundane desires.
Thus world is led by light of Buddha’s thought.
