In recent years, the term "wokeism" has emerged as a prominent force shaping public discourse and activism in Western societies. The word woke itself has colloquial origins. Derived from African American Vernacular English, being "woke" initially meant being aware of social injustices, racial prejudices and discrimination particularly those affecting marginalized communities. Social media influencers have played a large role in amplifying the woke agenda across the borderless world. The word trended in the 2010s, and later came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as racial injustice, sexism and denial of LGBT rights. However, its meaning has since broadened and evolved, encompassing a range of social, political and cultural phenomena.

Many western nations have positioned themselves as upholders of progressive societies. The wish list of these so-called progressive nations includes drug decriminalization, legalizing euthanasia, exploring gender beliefs and other such allied topics.  While this is at the government level, closer to the ground it is in the schools that the nightmare can be seen and felt.  Textbooks have been revised to uphold woke values. Parents of Indian origin with school going children find themselves in a predicament and stuck in a situation they did not anticipate.

Wokeism is characterized by an acute sensitivity to issues of race, gender, sexuality, and other forms of identity-based oppression. It promotes inclusivity, diversity, and social justice, often challenging established norms and power structures. While its supporters argue that it seeks to create a more equitable and just society, critics view it as divisive and overly focused on identity politics.

Woke ideology entered mainstream media, academia and corporate set ups in the last decade.  How does this happen? Concepts such as cultural appropriation, micro-aggressions, and privilege have entered the public discourse and workplace, prompting debates about their validity and implications.

Critics of wokeism argue that it fosters a culture of censorship and intolerance, stifling free speech and intellectual diversity.  Social media influencers put to use their power and activate what has come to be known as ‘cancel culture’ where individuals face public shaming or professional repercussions for expressing dissenting views.

Despite these criticisms, wokeism continues to shape societal norms and attitudes, influencing policy debates and cultural productions. Its proponents advocate for systemic changes to address historical injustices and promote equality of opportunity for all individuals, regardless of their background.

In short, wokeism represents a complex and contested phenomenon in Western societies, embodying both aspirations for social justice and concerns about its implications for freedom of expression and social cohesion. As it continues to evolve, its impact on politics, culture, and social relations remains a subject of intense debate and scrutiny. But an earnest wish is to keep the young impressionable minds of school children out of it. We want our children to master the science, math and arts concepts first before they begin to explore their gender identity and social injustices.
