Melody of Different Genres: Kalyanji-Anandji

Though I have written about many music directors and their popular songs in Hindi, I haven’t mentioned the duo Kalayanji-Anandji.

They were contemporaries of those times like Shankar Jaikishen, SD Burman, RD Burman, Laxmikant- Pyarelal. OP Nayyar to name a few.

Kalyanji-Anandji also enjoyed their share of fan following with their melodies and popular songs. Many of their songs for the popular stars of those times also became massive hits.

I also enjoyed many of their popular songs and the Hindi film aficionados.

Kalyan Virji Shah and Anand Virji Shah became Kalyanji- Anandji, later with their catchy numbers which turned popular. They too have a style of their own which is reflected in their songs.

Nevertheless, I cannot say that I heard and enjoyed all their popular or otherwise songs; many really touched me and I always consider melody and rhythm to catch any music lover instantly. The contributions by Kalyanji-Anandji are significant. Most of their songs were penned by Indeevar.

Here I highlighted some of the films where I enjoyed all their songs and some in particular. The supporting picture indicates the songs of the KA duo where I was impressed by their music. Yet let me list them more specifically the song that drew my attention significantly.

Apradh                            ‘Tum mile pyaar ke’                           Kishore, Asha

Johnny Mera Naam      ‘O mere raja’ & ‘Babul pyaare’            Kishore, Asha, Lata

Safar                              ‘Jeeva se bari’ & ‘Zindagi ka’              Kishore

Black Mail                     ‘Pal pal dil ke paas’                              Kishore

Haseena Maan Jayegi    ‘Behudi mein sanam’                         Rafi, Lata

Qurbani                          ‘Hum tumhe chahate’                        Manhar, Sadhana Sargam

Dharmatma                  ‘Tere chehre pe’, ‘Tumne kisi se’           Kishore, Kanchan

Geet                             ‘Jiske sapney hamei roz’                       Mahendra Kapoor, Lata

Those were times when both in Tamil and Hindi, lyricists, music directors, and singers were as important and celebrated as the stars.
