Deutsches Museum, Munich

I visited Deutsches Museum in Munich and was very impressed with what I saw in that Engineering Museum. I wanted to share the excitement and enjoyment through the photos below that I had taken there.  I have also taken the liberty of appending the messages, as they appeared in the museum for better readability.

Faster, more precise and cheaper - but better?

In the early 1960s, General Motors started using the first programmable robots in car manufacturing. The Triumphal march of the industrial robot had begun! Machines can perform some work steps, such as welding, more quickly, precisely and cost-effectively than people. Yet humans have not completely disappeared from factories. Instead, the aim is increasingly to achieve effective collaboration between people and robots.

Using robots under extreme and dangerous situations such as underwater during floods, underground, undersea, tunnels and even after earthquakes where it will be dangerous for humans.

Robots for unmanned platforms with manipulators for taking of samples of suspicious substances; vehicles equipped with state – of – the art robots for detecting and disarming of improvised explosive, incendiary devices and also for detection, investigation of chemical biological or toxic substances.

Japanese Robotic doll and pet dog

Robot flute player and the plaque describing the Robot flute player. The barrel is fitted with pins just as those used in the cuckoo clock. A mechanism transmits the programming to the fingers, which uncovers the corresponding hole on the flute, producing the sound.

Different types of robots being employed to study football (soccer) player’s moves for collecting information for analysis and game improvement. Today we can see these robots even assisting the referees to reenact the controversial decisions which are challenged by one team when the decision favors the opposing team.

Robots inspired by the movement in nature, as legs in humans, grippers from human hands, tentacles of spider, elephant’s trunk etc.

Robots to assist in taking care of the elderly or providing mobility when a particular part of body’s mobility is impaired.

Robots employed to make smart toys for children

A large-scale train model with all the accessory equipment and buildings where those are stored, operated from and maintained.

A Pendulum suspended from the ceiling was employed by Foucault to demonstrate the rotation of the earth for the first time in 1851, in Paris.

Picture and brief details of Oscar Van Miller, the founder of the Deustches Museum.

Comment Today, I read a news item that a robotic dog named "Spot" is on patrol at President elect Donald Trump's residence at Mar-a-Lago. Passers-by are warned by a sign on each of Spot’s legs: “DO NOT PET.” The sign is funny as robotic dogs don't look cuddly enough that one is tempted to pet them.
But the news item underscores the theme that in future we are going to more of these creatures in our daily lives doing repetitive type of jobs.
