Aging is a natural process. Old age is a bother. Old age homes are inadequate and are unaffordable for the majority of Indians.
The age-old practice was the parents would raise the children in the best possible way according to one's capacity and in the old age, they will be suitably looked after by the adult children. The custom is dead now.
Over 50% of Indian elders who are traditionally dependent on their children is in great disarray. Quite many are not treated well by their own sons and daughters. They are subjected to physical assault, verbal taunts, and other mental torture. Can you imagine the magnitude of mental trauma of those unlucky elders who suffer maltreatment at the hands of those whom they brought up with so much love and care? This is a stark reality now. Shedding tears for the erosion of old values will be futile.
Is there any remedy?
