Echoing Tom Stoppard, Robert Fulghum remarks in his book Uh-Oh: “Every exit is an entrance”
Amazing five words that rose for him out of a moment of knowing, in a grocery store! Five words stating a simple fact which can change our view of life when pondered upon.
Every exit becomes an entry into somewhere/something else. A baby exiting the familiar, warm womb tumbles into the world. It cannot stay in forever no matter how cosy it is in there. Leaving its comfort zone it pushes itself out into unknown territory. From childhood we enter into adulthood and so through life. We must not let fear trap us; we must squeak open untried doors to opportunities, to fulfilment of dreams and goals; By being bolder than our anxieties and taking risks we prove to ourselves that courage overrides panic.
Progress and success in life = walking through doors. There is a door within waiting to be opened. It will reveal tales nobody else will tell. It swings open both ways. Move away from ignorance and we find ourselves on the hallowed threshold of seeking. Get scared, turn around and bam! We are back in the darkness we want out from. True knowledge demands courage to step out of the known self; to strip it of fixed concepts; to venture into uncharted mindscapes that we may ultimately find a transformative power. We need to exit the deceiving self that we may enter the Self. Let us open metaphoric doors as we face them and step into the mysterious, quenching our thirst as we sip from the cup of life.
To quote Suzy Kassem “The more doors you open to the mysteries, or sacred knowledge, the smaller you feel. And because you begin to feel smaller and smaller until your ego disappears, the more humble you become.”
Every exit ramp is an entry point into something else. Some exits require a graceful passing through. It means switching off what no longer works for us — a relationship, a job or a particular stage in life however important it might once have been. No stagnating on the brink. Always moving on, growing... Entering and leaving, coming and going. There cannot be one without the other. Every entrance too can be an exit. Our entry into this world eventually opens an exit out of it.
But till then, “...every moment of our life holds a key for the unknown or the closed doors of new paths!”
