There is nothing more potent, more powerful than willpower in the universe. All atoms jubilate in the name of will. Actions begin and cease in the name of will. Will takes us from one moment to the next. The world, Maya, and all beings were created by the force of will.
Will is energy. Just as in an atom and its electrons rise and fall within different energy levels, the intensity and perseverance of will determine the rise and fall of the divine energy within us. Infinite willpower lies within the core of every living being, be it plants, animals or humans. However, the nature of will is what separates humans from other beings. Animals only have gross desires – prey, water, sleep. However, humans have the capability to will thoughts, creativity and Divinity. The willpower of man is indomitable. Not even God can conquer it, for God lies in the core of every human being.
Though we use lower levels of will energy on a day-to-day level (e.g. cooking a meal, studying to do well on a test, etc), we have yet to use it to its infinite potential. Will energy, used in faithful terms, can turn a common man into a saint, a mediocre man into a hero, and any being into God.
Perfection graces us through will. There are many today who believe in astrology, and are very strict about following specific advice given by an astrologer. For example, if an astrologer recommends a specific stone ring on a specific finger to alleviate a specific situation, then the ardent follower will surely wear the ring religiously. Another, who does not believe in astrology, takes a specific pilgrimage, and does so quickly for his personal benefit. But why is it that the ring-bearer does not benefit from the pilgrimage, and the latter from astrology? It is all a matter of belief. The ring itself does not hold inherent power; It is simply a stone. However, the ardent follower’s will is with the ring. His mind is convinced that the ring will aid him in harsh times – the belief of his will give even a common stone its due value.
Therefore, astrological objects and beliefs don’t actually give power. They simply remind one of one’s already acclaimed power – which is Infinite.
Whatever one believes is what one gets. When a human puts his or her entire body, mind and will behind a well-meaning action or idea, no force can resist it for long. It is like trying to stop God Himself – how can you? Nothing is greater than the belief one puts behind it. Swami Vivekananda once said, “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, that is way great spiritual giants are produced.”
We all admire other people in our lives, who are our heroes. A highly talented singer, a renowned scientist, a gifted writer – we are inspired by their specific quality traits such as hard work, determination, strength, etc. And by letting ourselves become immersed in such admiration, we actually allow the seeds of those traits to grow within us. No soul is incomplete; all qualities and traits exist within all. However, it is the respect and reverence of those qualities that allow them to grow from seed form into beautiful trees. This is not only spiritual; It is actually very psychological. The mind attracts what it reveres, and actions result from the person’s thinking patterns. Once again, will comes into play. If the person wills such qualities, such qualities will manifest in no time.
To evolve spiritually, we usually pray to a Higher Power. Instead of simply worshipping the Gods, try to see them as the very fire of inspiration, for only Gods can show you your true potential. Make them your heroes and role models. Their perfection is a source of inspiration for all human beings – the Divinity that lies within the Gods lies in seed form in all souls. It is our duty to realize the Immeasurable strength we hold within us. The Gods that we worship today – Lord Ram, Sri Krishna, Goddess Saraswati – actually lived on Earth thousands of years ago. They were humans who attained perfection while existing in similar circumstances as you and me. Meditating on the consciousness or energy of a particular God will send identical bolts of energy through you, thus allowing that energy to permeate through your consciousness. Such is the power of the Devas. Their presence inspires us to the Highest level.
No soul is incomplete. As Swami Vivekananda stated, “Never think there is anything impossible for the soul. It is the greatest heresy to think so. If there is sin, this is the only sin, to say that you are weak, or others are weak.”
Any being is an existence of the Highest energy level – inspiration and will radiate from our innermost core. By meditating on these Gods, inborn qualities such as strength, love, courage, piety and discrimination are reflected upon us.
