What is Diabetes?

When we consume food it is broken into minute particles. These minute particles or nutrients are absorbed by our intestine and then transferred to blood stream. Blood carries these nutrients to all the cells of our body. Body cells use these nutrients to carry out the normal body functions. Most of what we eat is broken down into glucose. Glucose is necessary to provide energy to our body cells to perform functions of body. Glucose enters body cells with the help of a hormone called insulin. Insulin is produced by Pancreas. Hence coordination between pancreas, insulin and body cells helps in normal absorption of glucose. Diabetes can occur when there is a break in this coordination.

  • When body does not produce enough insulin.
  • Failure of pancreas to produce insulin or no insulin
  • When body cells fail to respond to insulin.
In these conditions glucose level in blood increases and it gets excreted through urine. This condition is known as Diabetes. In this condition even though the blood has plenty of glucose, the cells are not getting it for their essential energy and growth requirements. Diabetes surfaces due to disturbed metabolism. Hence Diabetes is called as metabolic disorder.

Ayurveda acharyas have named this condition as “madhumeha”. Signs and symptoms of madhumeha have been described in texts of ayurveda.
