Power of Love and Poetry

About 500 years back a rich youth from priestly class gave his turban for washing to Sheik. At the end of the turban he had written a line with a mind to complete the couplet later, but he completely forgot and gave for washing. On the appointed day Sheik returned the turban after washing. However, to his surprise the youth found a line below his line, apparently written by Sheik. He was so enchanted and impressed by Sheik’s line that he said to her, ‘half an anna (anna is one sixteenth of a rupee) for washing and Rs.1000 for the couplet.' The two lines of the couplet are here below:

The youth:  Kanchan chhadi kamini kaahe kati kshin
Sheik       :
Kati to kanchan kaat Vidhi, kuchan madhye dhaar diye

Translation

Oh maiden! (resembling) a stick of gold
why is your waist so slender?
Scooping out the gold from the waist
He sharpened (moulded) the breasts,
(the handiwork) of Brahma, the creator…
Later the youth married Sheik, got converted to islam and is known to the world as the famous poet  ‘Alam’.
