Present Time

In time you will understand, I was told:
but what is time if it is not the present?
Yet language of this problem takes a hold:
presently, the future to represent –
because it’s at all times only the present.

What is the future if it’s not a prospect
in the present? – unreal till here and now:
and the past hauled up in mute retrospect
more related to the future somehow -
in conceptual dimension both allow.

The present in its objectivity
is a wonder to behold, its transience
an illusion, its relativity
really the definition that makes science
work – touch, feel, the focal point of appearance.

How then, the future it materialises,
the past it retains, and future and past
meet in what the present now realises,
can it never be claimed, until the last
day – that day alone – that the die is cast.
