Bound by Poetry alone

Poetry brought us together.
But we were wide apart in age.
You were free, but not I.
For you it was no risk.
But for me it would have been betrayal
of my family.
So I was circumspect
and careful.
No false hopes,
no entanglement.

You were a bit upset.
The twinkle of hope and expectation
in your eyes dimmed.
You thought I belied your hope.

Your body was inviting.
But I tried desperately
to douse the fire.
I could hear the snuffing out
of the warm breath
that took hold of you.

I ignored your pouting lips
and planted a kiss in your cheek,
held you by your shoulder,
and said:
Let us be bound by poetry alone!
