I’ve had too many loves that claimed to be
Born for me, not from their lips, but from sight
Alone, something within the heart of me
That could not lie, yet faded in the light
Of changing circumstances, each removed
And replaced, given the passage of time,
By another, all convincing, till proved
Mistaken, recalled as a pantomime,
Real enough, eluding reality;
And in the succession, I stayed sincere,
To this day, I swear, the finality
Was no delusion; yet, it became clear
That accruing they amounted to many
Unions, a stark contradiction in terms;
But when I think in terms of matrimony,
They never happened, it was in my dreams.
