Woman of Substance

How beastly he behaved,
my man;
as if my body was for him
to devour.

I would not know
how to thwart him;
I was just married,
new to the experience.

Being new to my in-laws,
it took some time to take control
of the affairs of the house.

First it was my father-in-law
I took to my side,
Then I slowly worked through
to take control of my mother-in-law.

Meanwhile, I had a daughter.
She is like a full moon,
as sweet as sugar,
and as soft as a cotton ball,
and as radiant as a Chameli flower.

To win over my mother-in-law
was not an easy task.
But I am a woman too!
I have taken all the guile out
of my mother-in-law and sister-in-law
through tact and showering of affection.

Finally, I have worked through my husband.
Though not hen-pecked really,
he will dare not touch me,
if I say turn over darling,
I am tired today.
Would not dare flirt in parties.

I have used my womanhood well.
From a petite flower
to a fragrant flowering tree
has been a journey
worth traversing.

I am a woman of substance.
