Till some years back
I had only two childhood friends.
I am not the one
who grows up with lots of friends.
And I was not singularly happy
to have just two friends.
We would gush,
we would open up
when together.
One friend,
tall, dark hardy
had a condescending attitude,
which though I never resented.
Though in social strata terms
I was a few notches higher.
He married early,
in distant Bengal,
our dreamland,
being born and brought up in Delhi.
And the event of his marriage
is still a strong memory.
Loveliest of all,
the event gave me a girlfriend.
A longtime girlfriend,
she died in unfortunate circumstances,
which is such a sad memory.
But this friend
had for some reason
deserted me,
for unknown reasons;
though he called me
in his daughter's marriage.
The other friend
is a fair lanky fellow.
Same school, same college,
very well read.
He never married.
He is from an aristocratic family
and loved me.
Though we drifted a bit,
being very docile,
very soft spoken.
But whenever I get mentally distressed
he makes it a point
to come by my side,
and prop me up.
A true friend.
Like marriages are made in heaven,
I realise, friendships too are heavenly,
or curse, or sorrow giving.
They are God's way of nurturing
or punishing
qualities of humans.
Friendship is unique human relationship next only to Love !
