A train passed my carriage hovering light
in twice-multiplied speed; and just before
it vanished, "Relative velocity!"
echoed through my mind: an expression
that lingered on as the green earth gripped tight
the eyes' prevailing act, and made me think
as its reflection of directions
opposite, such as this time's suited men
bear to those whose direction is within:
how, on the one track, an amazing speed
in worldly affairs fades to a mutual
blur in the unworldly soul's speed to God,
on the other; and when each has passed green
earth calculates the pause that endures.
