Theme: Birds

A lone Kingfisher on a Wet Highway

A lone Kingfisher on a wet highway
He sits on the wire -
The lone but elegant,
Multi-hued, Long-billed Kingfisher,
On this early Saturday
Wind-swept morning;
The only visitor
from the heavens,
Perched dandily on the power cable,
Overlooking the sparse traffic,
On the wet gleaming highway,
Scrubbed clean
By the first showers,
Of the breaking day;
The glorious Kingfisher,
Neck bent right,
Looking at the gathering dark clouds,
Bringing in more rain
To parched Mumbai.
The White-breasted Kingfisher,
Composed of electrifying blue,
Deep red, Shining chestnut,
And vivid white,
A stunning combination
Against the half-blue, half-grey
Vast sky,
Not noticed by
the Passing motorists.
