When I asked, ‘Where is God in Syria?’
I was told: ‘Leave God out of it.’
And so it would appear.
Yet both sides profess belief in God,
Assad bows in reverence in the mosque,
and rebels cry ‘Allahu Akbar!’ with each shot.
The outcome left beyond doubt in God’s hands,
to each side victory assured: is not this
the right and proper stance?
It implies that only through conflict,
the shedding of blood and loss of lives,
can the will of God be known on earth.
And all wars since the beginning
bear testament to this fact,
God left out of it, except in the winning.
