I am not so strong
That I can bear the burden of your love
That is why you are so kind
You have kept such distance between you and me -
Those barriers of joys and sorrows
Of worldly possessions
And of relations of various kinds.
Like the soft rays of the sun
Shining through the broken clouds
At times you appear to us in glimpses
But those whom you have given the strength
To bear the burden of your love
You remove all veils from their view.
You take away their shelters and possessions
You make them poor beggars of the way
They have no ego
Nothing can dishonour them
They have no fear or shame
You alone fill their world.
To stay with you face to face
To keep their being filled with you all the time
Those whom you have thus blessed
They are so greedy
To make enough room for you
They give up all greed
And keep their hearts fully free.
Translation of poem 66 from the collection Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore.
