Screams of Sonagachi

While crossing the red light area I saw its red roses on either side Fluttering to display their beauty Fleeting fragrance of perfumes Bleeding out of tempting smiles. They lined up against the railings For the customers of midnights - Sex-hungry beasts of dark streets Who would devour them tonight Only to let them breathe morrow. By gratifying long lust of today's. My heart heard their prey-woos Through my sense and sensibility My eyes witnessed growing woes Tattooed in red tears since long On their naked arms, thick thighs Long lacerated ignominious scars On their cigarette-burnt bodies The necks, cheeks with lust bites Used and reused as sex objects In their flashy and fleshy dresses Tear-smeared under the makeup. Even eyeliners and mascara failed To stream their life in mainstream. Their powdered cheeks do shriek To have a healing touch by society To get rid of their pathetic, sad plights In the dark dungeon of Sonagachi Flooded with their pains, eyeful rains.
