Theme: Narrative

Adjust

I have learned to adjust, since my beginning,
When I was in my mother’s womb, there I
had a sibling too, after my and my brother’s birth, my granny used to often say
Hope this little girl doesn’t take all nourishment and care, which my grandson deserves most

When I grew up, they told me boys are superior so they need the best
I thought it was the ultimate truth and again I adjusted,
In my food, my play, my studies, my desires I adjusted
So my brother could get the most and best

After my marriage, I learned to compromise and again adjust
As my man was superior to me
I had to compromise with my life, my dreams, and my self
But I happily adjusted
Guess this word has become a crucial word of my life

Adjust is a perpetual state of mine…
I am sitting with my baby girl here,
The priest asked me to whisper first words in her ears,
Live my girl, to the fullest, to the whole
Never kill your dreams in the name of adjust, but listen to your soul

Comment Adjustment, compromise, rationalize etc. should not be words used for women alone...But yes, these words are often used to guide and reinforce 'feminine' behaviour. A well wrotten piece Renu Kala, that captures the fact of a girl child's evol;ution as a woman like it is. Yes, today's mdern, educated woman does not want her daughter to go throug what she herself did. However, to mutually adjust, compromise or rationalize in moderation is really not bad...
