Discussions on religion often tend To become heated, and therein is the
Nub of the problem; bound up with emotions,
Religious deities purport to show
Who one is; and that is why all serious
Attempt at changing heart is futile, be
They the proven words of scholars, they smack
Of grimness that curdles truth as soon spoken.
They miss the point: religion is not about
Truth defined in alien terms, but a way
of life, a whole tradition of belief;
That is why debates get nowhere, the side
Harbours what is loved and cherished, one
Finds fault in the other’s arguments
As a form of reprisal, heeding them
Not, embracing truths that fulfil emotions.
