Much has been made of the Black Lives Matter
Slogan, ‘I Can’t Breathe’, marking a turning point
In the destiny of all who so identify.
In the billowing of emotion, George Floyd
Takes on the aura of a martyr to the cause,
Tainted with the depression of these hard times
That so easily in the memory of
An oppressed people, resurges to force
The recognition that the present seems
No different to the past, that despite reforms
Bringing that same people to social parity,
Cultural integration, and more, there remains
Much to be desired, so much indeed as
Stifles breath in the self-same phrase Floyd used,
But now, sustained in triumph, enabling
A generation’s voice to be heard: ‘I
Can’t Breathe’ in the firm conviction, ‘I Can Breathe’. |
