It came in from the East
In the guise of the bogeyman
Belatedly, the battle lines were drawn.
It reduced life to bare bones
Suspended in animation
Nothing was ever the same again.
All activity stalled
Living became an abstraction
It was never the same again.
It behoved us
To comply, living in lockdown,
Nothing was ever the same again.
Amidst indefatigable heroism and dedication,
The fatalities mounted, could not be brought down,
It was never the same again.
There were discourses and discussions
Deputies standing in for a leader in recuperation
Nothing was ever the same again.
There is no panacea, or immediate cure
The curve of the pandemic, the vicious Covid-19,
It will never be the same again.
We are in its grip, the Coronavirus
Terrified, powerless, prostrate and supine,
Nothing will ever be the same again.
We were smug and late in recognising the danger
Vital days were lost, warnings ignored, through inaction
It was never the same again.
From distant parts it travelled
Through countries and continents, airways and oceans
Nothing was ever the same again.
Supposedly rich countries are in tatters
Reeling from a knockout blow, in meltdown,
It may never be the same again.
The cost is considerable, progress is hindered
A delicate balance, between rejuvenation and casualties, beckons
Nothing will ever be the same again.
It feels like a surreal dream, but it is not
Unravelling through layers, unfolding through pages and screens
It will never be the same again.
Faraway nations are torn asunder
It is the enemy that spreads, seemingly without a vaccine
Nothing will ever be the same again.
This could wreck nations, unite or break societies
It may take decades for full cost to become known
It will never be the same again.
We are at crossroads, a seminal moment
To be judged by history, those in full bloom and
Those as yet unborn,
Nothing will ever be the same again.
Trust and faith will diminish
Elite decision makers viewed with scorn,
It will never be the same again.
The spectre of a second wave looms
The threat real, through predicted timelines
Nothing will ever be the same again.
The witch has pricked her thumbs
This wicked thing is cutting a swathe of destruction
Embattled and shorn, we fight this demon from dawn.
