Attracted by gleaming sunlight, coming from
The nearby shoreline, I move in slowly to investigate.
Intrigued, I peer into the depths of blue-green
Water, where to my great surprise, amorous,
Multi-coloured sea horses gallop in military fashion
Through the seaweed strewn rock pool,
Chasing after beautiful tiny mermaids.
They sing liquid lullabies to their determined suitors
In a coy manner, in concerted efforts to slow down
The pursuing knights of the sea.
Suddenly, ripples of excited water appear,
Spreading slowly across the still surface.
I ache in amazement as the mermaid queen breaks the surface
Her silver mirror reflecting the sun’s rays all around.
I gasp in stunned delight at her radiant beauty;
Hoping beyond all things that my time has come at last.
The mermaid queen looks straight into my
Love-struck eyes and laughs in cruel derision;
Before flicking her silver tail and disappearing
Under the rock pool surface
Into the depths below.
I sigh, and accept defeat as always; for I am just an ugly crab
And she is one of the beautiful creatures. |
