Once in the labyrinth of old Kurnool city,
On an urgent errand, along with the family;
My two little ones gazed at a huge iron cage,
That contained birds in diverse hues and rage.
They made us the captives of their passion,
Chose two pairs, as per their later confession;
Named them - Sunny, Leo, Romeo and Juliet,
Of the four, the yellow Sunny being the cutest.
Far from city, at the new Vintage Green Fields,
At our home, amid the spaces of serene moulds;
They all swung and chirped to our hearts’ sway,
As the courtyard-guests waited to find their way.
A few kittens, hens, a turkey, a dog called tiger,
On their regular strolls to the yard, rather eager;
Enticed us, as they’re watched and fed the feed,
Until the day, Brownie cat did the dreadful deed.
On that fateful day, in the gleeful wee hours,
As the area lay engulfed in the dark covers;
The wily cat crept in through the exhaust hole,
To bewile the cute yellow Sunny’s naive soul!
The shrill cries, thuds and the bloodstained spot,
Sweet Sunny’s body being clawed by the despot;
Fellow birds, mourning the lying dead in silence,
That mayhem rekindled our family’s resilience!!!
