It is my habit to sit on a chair observing
The people around me while my wife Meera is busy selecting
A saree in a cloth shop. During one of the shopping
Sprees, I noticed a group of women aged between 17 and 70 sitting
In front of a rack of saree, salwar kameez, and T-shirts and jeans, discussing
About the various types of sarees the salesman was showing
Except the senior lady in the group, others were talking
About the colour combination and texture of the sarees, even as they were talking
Over their mobiles and occasionally looking
At the face of the senior lady who was watching.
Meanwhile, Meera came and said that she would be going
To the first floor and told me to wait at the billing
Counter on the ground floor, while I was waiting
I saw the same group of women who were choosing
A saree on the second floor, standing
Near the payment counter, the senior lady said “You were only talking,
You never bothered to allow me to choose a saree of my liking.
After the function is over you make use of this saree for stitching
A salwar kameez for you.” I felt the other members of the group
Who were not the sari-clad women involved in selecting
A saree without knowing the type of saree the senior lady would be preferring. |
