The Heavenly Abode

If on earth there is a heaven,
It is this, it is this, it is this!
Says the inscription in Jahangir’s garden,
In Kashmir valley, a heavenly bliss!

Dal Lake with its beauty clean and pristine,
Gulmarg with the green-carpeted mountain,
Bubbling and dancing rivulets in the ravine,
A sight that a romantic can hardly contain!

God must have personally supervised,
In the creation of this beautiful valley!
Adversities of the past, it has proudly survived,
Alas! The current tumult keeps it alive, barely!

Snow capped mountains where Gods reside,
Here, where human imagination has created,
Many stories and many rules that people abide,
Alas! These now, the malcontents have desecrated.

Kashmir, where Shankara reached on foot,
A temple and shrine, here he built,
Now with strife, melee and the loot,
The killing goes on unhindered, without guilt.

Hindus and Muslims fighting on every road,
Indiscriminate killing on the basis of religion.
Acts, unfitting to this blessed heavenly abode,
Have brought death and terror to this whole region.

The Gods, if they should stake their claim,
May finally save this valley from disaster.
To be salvaged, while people kill and maim,
Kashmir may have to turn to its benefactor!
