The Phenomenon of Man

Ostensibly, the first man, Adam, did not
have a mother, which puts us on alert:
all subsequent men having mothers are yet,
as sons of Adam, beyond natural birth.

The cult of the fully formed creates the gods
of mythology, who emerge as a pantheon;
in Hinduism, too, gods are fixed and timeless,
the concepts man creates in mirror image.

We are all of us self-categorised as man,
it is to this generality all laws are addressed,
in this common name all action performed,
man achieves all things, man is responsible.

If Adam wasn’t born of woman, then neither
in Adam are we, the perennial man
of history, our context produces man fully
formed, and so addressed, and so our destiny.
