Theme: Social

Domestic Violence is an Offense

Be it custard, mustard, sugar, tea or ghee
in full I give not to one but everyone
small or big all in one I too own a family
hand till mouth I am held right, once done I am none

Every soul brought to the earth
milk I pour, the way I care to make you pink
full, when I am, you declare there is no dearth
all right, in use, then you throw, in a stinking sink

Though I can when overdone, never I explode
you dare, you care, before you all share
rice, pulse or meat I do shout to tell you loud
why do you throw me later there?

With sticky oil, hot and shallow, after turmoil
I make them shy, then fry, to serve in joy high and dry
curry in hurry, veggie in a flurry, fully I boil
plight is right until night; there in pool lonely I lie
Tea I give morning or night
he or she I am always right
whether in party or in fight
afterwards look at my plight

In heaps I lie, to give a measure
in hand I am when mouth in leisure
what about me after lunch or dinner
thrown without bother, though not a sinner

Class apart everyone is my guest
hot or cold, I, always a part as a host
in hand I feel warm and calm
waiting I am, struck in a dirty vessel jam

Oh user! You are my father and my mother,
who else to tell, expect you, when in bother?
my master beat me, the fire ate me
for your service in the form you see

Among my clan I am in peace and calm
the care I am shown every day before I am gone
until I impress after many, like you someone
as a bride I come to serve you in your home
I am cared and used and made to think you are my own
serving and wearing finally, I remain always alone
offence is domestic violence* equally for utensils and women
do not ill treat, though not give heaven

*Domestic Violence
Violence against women is a serious problem in the world. Overall, one-third of women in the Age group 15-49 has experienced domestic violence which includes physical, verbal abuse and harassment. This figure translates into millions of women who have suffered, and continue to suffer. This poem is an outcome of my experiences. I tried to draw an analogy between women and kitchenware. I could draw many similarities. In an indirect way I was trying to present the plight of such women in the society.
