Midnight Medley

Silent streets guard the city
vigilant stray dogs too on duty
fortunate  gentry, young and old
sleep warmly, away from  consuming cold.

Overcast sky hesitates
to open up or not
lap dogs open eyes lazily
distinctions on display blatantly.

Earth and sky never near
needy and greedy always afar, 
hunger and sleep shameless
in seeking small comforts.

Streaming street lamps throw shadows
silent deals quietly struck
hunger plays a cruel trick
sleepless nights for hungry folks.

Dusk is dawn for lowly lives
needs draw away from home
streets turn taverns, gnawing agony
aching limbs look for resting place.

Rest not in sight in the night
endless hunt  for a penny
many deaths for a morsel
remorseless city sleeps while awake!
