Heart of the River

I saw that day
A rainbow descending
Into the eyes of the river
For an instant and again
It flew swiftly together with
The breeze of the brains
Since then has been flying amidst
The clouds and sunshine
Spreading out its seven-coloured wings.

I saw that night
When the pain of the world was
Not seemingly coming to an end
There were repeated ripples in the lake
When water lilies tried to be steady
Then that ripple became a ringing laughter
And mingled with the deep of the sea and suddenly
Became a sea-shell….

Whenever clouds in the sky
Talk unbraiding their black hair, the river
Listens to their talk
With attention; the talk --of the one-drop;
Of the transforming drop
And movements in the lake began again
And from the lake-deep eyes
Pearls rained and spread out
Spread out on the earth.

I saw the river that evening
Walking in the street,
Eyes to the earth, fish swam in the nimbus waves
That evening in the street of
An unfamiliar land where the moon looked hung upside down
The river was flowing with her steadfast strides
A crane alighted on her waves and flew away with the fish
The river kept on quietly walking with her nimble steps
Whether she did not notice or she did ignore the incident
No one knows and the river flowed, undisturbed.

Does a river have a heart?
Sometimes I feel that the whole river
Is a heart, a long, expansive, wise, uncontaminated feeling heart
A heart which cleans the blood of creation moving
With streams primal, a heart which have purified the waters
Since centuries, a heart in which pure water has been flowing,
The filth of the human centuries has failed to
Turn its pure soul into toxic mess.

I saw a river like this
That morning, still sluggish with the sleep,
But all at once a fast-flowing river, a river
Which was moving quietly, with hurried pace
Yes, a river in a great hurry
Whose eyes were somber, hung on their eyelashes were
Fury, affection, and the flowers of the worldly angel
On the eyebrows were hung the bows and arrows
To pierce into the Achilles’ heels of the fleeting Time
And to transfix him;

She is the only one in the world
To catch the flow of Time in her matted hair
And despite that feat she has the soft smile
Of compassion on her face; of the one
Who destroyed and washed the sins
Of the dead sons for their sacred rebirth
I saw the river gathering  the ashes of the dead from the pyre
With her hands after sunrise
And taking them with her streams

And I saw that river at noon
Bright, calm, self-possessed and eternal;
With eyes bent down to earth gazing,
Searching for something  beneath the streams
And suddenly she gets up
And starts moving gently, with silent steps,
Flanked by her banks.
