Theme: Disaster

The Trial of Haiti

On the scale of a world map it is
insignificant – within itself a world
of disaster, a transfer sliding
over each of our great cities

moving their solid foundations,
the hearts of nations, the hearts
of people, the whole world convulsed
with the shock, the horror, the pain.

Port au Prince the capital city
everywhere – everywhere its ruins,
everywhere its shattered people’s
lives, and everywhere the effort

to save what’s left to save, gagged by
the lagging logistics, to drown itself
in news, more news, till slowly
the aid arrives to where it’s needed:

not nearly less to the whole world.

(this poem commemorates the Haiti earthquake disaster of January 2010)
