Theme: Anguish

Soul on Sale

Standing in front of a hill range

that pushes the sky further up,

I get a thrill and wonder

by whom and for whom

it gets such a grand make-up...!

In contrast,

standing close to a man-made

Supermarket with myriad stuffs in its belly,

I get a scare - is it a shark

to gulp up the farmers

who toil day-long in the field

and the weavers who sweat on the looms?

Instead of entering the prison of the rich

I quietly reach the old woman

who sells greens and local fruits

arranged in small heaps

Instead of buying an imported computerized lock,

I get to the teenager

who does an honest job to repair one

we inherited from our grandfather

I do not relish to buy one

and get two free –

that is a mere trick

to fuel the greed in me

and leave the poor artisan in lurch

and in debt traps merely to sigh…

A thought can’t we spare

to throw a rope to rescue one

who is sinking in the slush

of corruption of men in power

raising superdomes

to rob common man's modest homes?

A war can’t be fought nor won

with borrowed arsenal and weapon,

with FDI and raising loan after loan

a nation can hardly raise its head

where the rulers spare nothing for others

and feed on poor’s honey and bread!
