He had always wanted to defend his country
From the treacherous omnipresent enemy
On the appointed day he said his goodbyes
To his family and all the neighbourhood guys
He looked smart in his brand new uniform
Told all that he would to military life conform
His parents were a worried lot they'd miss him
Besides their whole lives had been dedicated to him
His Dad in tears hugged him for an extra long time
His Mom clung to him whispering these words sublime
"My son be brave but not too brave
Do not unnecessarily for risk crave
With our country you must lives also save
War does many souls unfortunately deprave"
He left with his Dad’s fresh tears on his coat
And his mother’s words learnt by rote
But once on the battlefield he forgot all
He answered bullet for bullet before his own fall
The so called “messenger of death” from the Military
Visited his home to convey the sad news to his family
