Theme: Change

Breadwinner

Some bread and a cup of tea
Life slipped away between the bites and sips
Someone said ‘change’ was my right
I dreamt of more than bread and tea for my son
So I decided to join the revolution
Moved ahead and fought and fainted
But never let the flag slip
Then we torched property and from the flames we ran
It was dawn as usual and then they said everything was ours
‘Let’s rebuild’ they said and I started laying the bricks for a school that was destroyed
I only feel sad that my son can’t enroll
He died in the clashes
Nothing has really changed
Not even my bread and tea.
