Theme: Absence

Portrait of the Poor

'Poverty is a curse',
there can't be for sure
a second opinion...
but behind the agony and distress
there is a slender line
of unseen happiness.

The poor is brave.
Living beyond the elastic limit
of the society's stress and strain
he fears not
the rise and fall of gold price,
the exchange rate of Euro and dollar
has no impact and creates no crisis.

He is a hot dish for social philosophers,
a ready-made cheap model for painters,
this 'aam aadmi' is hired to clap
for each political leader and to carry banners

Hunger is his religion,
there is no need for him
to wear on his forehead
the footmarks of any god,
neither a skull-cap nor a turban
to show the man-made division
in His grand unique creation!

The shadows of the rich
look richer than this 'aam admin' in person,
need is his constant companion,
for protection he carries no gun.

In society's large album
he carries not a smile
but deep sighs of a 'still life',
a life-size silent portrait
defying all hate and many a strife!
