The walls will grind their meal,
Inmates pounded between prison and guard.
Liberty is chained and yoked,
Harnessed to that hopeless wheel,
Urged on in endless haul
By despair’s cruel lash.
The sun’s burning eye focuses
On freedom’s plight;
Night’s chill intensifies isolation.
Repetition dulls memories,
The grey of sameness
Obscures recollections,
Expunging colour,
Warmth and life.
