Theme: Paradox

At Something Hidden

At something hidden, something undisclosed,
Hints our most loud and manifest opinion;
And what is true is not in that proposed
But what's concealed, that binds the two in union.
That this should be the modus operandi
Of fashionable exchange gives cause for no
Demur, but rather lends to mind and eye
A form deceitful to express truth so.
Thus nature revels in costumes and colours
That humankind sublimes to something true,
Itself disports the self-same tones and contours,
Creates the social image that makes do.
But let God speak, and there is truth indeed,
Which false each makes so that to God it lead.
