In fruits and flowers and grains
This earth is so rich
But there is one land on it
It is the richest of all
Made of our dreams, steeped in our memories
Its equal nowhere you will find
It is the queen among countries
It is the land of our birth
Our dear motherland!
The sun, the moon and the stars
Shine nowhere else so bright
Where does lightning play among the clouds
As it does in our skies?
The singing birds send us to sleep
At daybreak they again wake us up.
Where the streams are so cool
Where the hills are so misty
Where the fields are so green
And meet the sky?
Blown by the winds
Where in waves the cornfields dance
Trees are full of flowers
And the birds sing in the bowers
Where the humming bees
Crowd around the blooms
Whose honey lulls them to sleep!
Where will you find so much love
In mothers and brothers
Let me bow at the feet of this mother
In whose lap I was born
May I also die in her arms.
Transcreation of the famous Bengali patriotic song – Dhana-dhanya puspe bhara amader ei bosundhara – by Dwijendralal Roy. Like Bankimchandra’s Bande mataram it was a favourite song of the freedom fighters of Bengal. It is also sung during the celebration of our Independence Day.
