It makes sense, culling to control disease,
forecasting the effect on market factors;
animal life is only that of species,
one you may think made up of characters,
the naming which, an individual mark
bestows, a life, a personality
shows, humanising the intelligent spark
in bestial undergrowth, a specialty
in the kind of relationship, long-term,
a photograph collection might reveal;
but difference there is between us and them,
though patronage we try hard to conceal
at best of times; at worst, we cull the species,
and offer the beasts to our tender mercies.
A badger cull in the UK is currently being proposed to eradicate the incidence of bovine tuberculosis that is threatening the cattle farming industry.
