It was reported today that a lion
slipped out of an unlocked cage and attacked
a couple of camels, killing one, severely
mauling the other – a photograph showed it
down on bent forelegs, great clumps of fur torn
from its back. It gave the impression of
great fortitude, sadly bowing its head.
In that moment, one might grant it human
indignation, one might bestow on it
the power of meaningful comment, and
as one carefully positioned the mike,
a hush to give its weakened voice force:
At first nothing, but difficult breaths; then:
‘Wild beast! - to slaughter an innocent camel!’
At the other end of the zoo, the lion,
like endowed, yawns, ‘No capital offence.’ |
